Boxing Chicks Gear Up For Georgia Games!

July 8 - 11 Decatur Boxing Gym's own Krichele Featherston and Crystal Bush walked away from the Women's National Golden Gloves with Silver (Kris) and Gold (Crystal) Medals in their weight classes! They both fought competitive fights and will be fighting again at the Georgia Games this weekend along with 'kitten" Carlos Monroe and several of DBC's male amateurs.

Also joining the team this yer at the Georgia Games will be Master boxer Mischa Mertz. She is in the states from Australia and will be on the DBC team!

DBC also welcomes female boxer Patricia Aclivar to their team. Patricia is a well established amateur who is fighting for the last time outside of the professional ranks at the Georgia Games this weekend. She will be working with Terri Moss and will be turning pro soon after the Games.
Pray for all the DBC fighters to go home with wins!

Forbes Healthiest Foods

One of my executive boxing camp students sent me a link on what Forbes says are the healthiest foods on earth. I told her I wrote the article, but she didn't believe me. Here's a little piece of that article. I have to say that I'm in agreement with most of what they say. I always try to convince people that there is a direct correlation to body fat and toxins in the body, but nobody listens to brainy smurf, right? :)

To read the whole article just click here.

The Healthiest Foods On Earth

Jonny Bowden

07.07.09

The most important consideration in constructing a healthy diet: Eat whole food with minimal processing. These 12 foods do the trick.

What is the best diet for human beings?

Vegetarian? Vegan? High-protein? Low-fat? Dairy-Free?

Hold on to your shopping carts: There is no perfect diet for human beings. At least not one that's based on how much protein, fat or carbohydrates you eat.

People have lived and thrived on high-protein, high-fat diets (the Inuit of Greenland); on low-protein, high-carb diets (the indigenous peoples of southern Africa); on diets high in raw milk and cream (the people of the Loetschental Valley in Switzerland); diets high in saturated fat (the Trobriand Islanders) and even on diets in which animal blood is considered a staple (the Massai of Kenya and Tanzania). And folks have thrived on these diets without the ravages of degenerative diseases that are so epidemic in modern life--heart disease, diabetes, obesity, neurodegenerative diseases, osteoporosis and cancer.

In Depth: The Healthiest Foods On Earth

The only thing these diets have in common is that they're all based on whole foods with minimum processing. Nuts, berries, beans, raw milk, grass-fed meat. Whole, real, unprocessed food is almost always healthy, regardless of how many grams of carbs, protein or fat it contains.

All these healthy diets have in common the fact that they are absent foods with bar codes. They are also extremely low in sugar. In fact, the number of modern or ancient societies known for health and longevity that have consumed a diet high in sugar would be ... let's see ... zero.

Truth be told, what you eat probably matters less than how much processing it's undergone. Real food--whole food with minimal processing--contains a virtual pharmacy of nutrients, phytochemicals, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and healthful fats, and can easily keep you alive and thriving into your 10th decade...

Highlights of the WNGG!

Well it's taking me a minute, but finally here is the report from the Women's National Golden Gloves. Yea! Things have been so busy getting organized for the 1984 Olympic Reunion that I've hardly had time to post. I'm looking for things to eventually run a little on their own soon though. That will be a well needed break.

So back to the WNGG. Ok.. Anyone who has hung with us at fight time knows that after the weigh-ins we gotta have pancakes. Its the only time my fighters will get to do that in front of me, so they may as well take advantage of that. The fact is, my fighters are well trained and well rested. They can afford pancakes, trust me. And besides that, its a boxing tradition. I did it, my pros do it, my amateurs do it. What better excuse is there to splurge? :)

Here we are day 1, after the weigh in at I-Hop. There's Lisa on the left, and Kris and Crystal on the other side. They were ready to fight.
And here we are at the venue with Ann Wolf. Good LORD she's a biggun! I think her feet were as long as my femur! Ann is a former world champion who trains some guys now including undefeated pro James Kirkland. She's got a gym in Austin, Texas. She doesn't say much though.. And who's going to complain? Not me, that's for sure. Her spit would probably knock me out. I've got Kris next to me and Patricia Alcivar, one of my latest students who I will be turning pro after the Georgia Games this weekend. Be on the look out for Patricia on the professional scene soon!

Ok, here's the rundown. Crystal (left) won the Gold Medal in the novice division at 119 125 pounds, and Kris won the Silver Medal in the novice 119 pound division. Her they post with Crystal's "bling".

And meet Mischa Mertz! She's a journalist from Australia who is an amateur boxer too! She's written a book on her experience as a woman amateur boxer in the "masters" division (over 34 years old) called "Bruising." Unfortunately its only available in Australia. Drat. Mischa is 45, and she came to the states just this month to try to box since its illegal for women to box at her age in Australia, and she's doing research and documenting it as she experiences it! How cool is that! When I find out where to get her book I'll post it. Oh, she's coming to Atlanta to box Comedian Susan Dunn (42 years old) in the masters division at the Georgia Games this weekend! Its cool that they both get a chance to box. I'll be in Mischa's corner and she'll be staying with me for a couple of days. I'm sure I'll be in her book as her favorite trainer. :)

We did get a chance to take Mischa to I-Hop for our morning pancake ritual. She said she had never had them, and they tasted like flour paste and sugar. Hmm.. yeah, that sounds about right. Oh, and she said the US smells sweet like corn syrup. Oh. We're so fat we smell like corn syrup. Great. At least we don't smell like fish or something I guess. Here we are at I-Hop.

And after everything was over we stopped at the local Bass Pro Shop in Fort Lauderdale. I found a gun my size. Here I am giving my gangster pose.

And we did have a minor accident.. I KNEW there were darn sharks in that water, I knew it! Kris thought it was funny, but I didn't think so at all, I mean look at that! I could have been killed.

It was a good trip. Kris fought twice, Crystal fought once and Patricia fought twice. We're moving on now this weekend to the Georgia Games. I'll be reporting on that too. Thanks for keeping posted!

Riliey's Big Day At The Gym!

Riley has grown so much.. For those of you who don't know, I'm a granny! Here's Riley a few weeks ago, when we first showed him how to slip and block a jab. He's been watching James Toney on his inside moves. He's really learning fast. :)

Here he is after a good workout, looking in his granny's face to let her know how much he loves her more than his mama. :)
He had just hopped out of the shower.

Then his first day in the gym, and look at him go! He even looks bored with that double-end bag. It must be too slow for the fast hands of Riley Pepin.

Don't make him show you his boxing pose.. He says, "Buy a table at the Olympic Reunion.. or ELSE!"

And here he is working out with his trainer, ME, his granny. :)

video

He'll be a champ real early, I'm sure. Let's see.. he's two months old now.. I give him at least a month in training. Not much more though, he's a real talent!

Off To The Women's National Golden Gloves

Is it that time already? Wow.. That year seemed to zoom past me, yet here we are, off again to the Women's National Golden Gloves. This is the best amateur boxing event for women that I've been to. Bonnie Cannino and Yvonne Reis have done an incredible job bringing this tournament to Florida every for many years now, and its one of the most desirable places for women amateurs to box. The best in the country will be there, including us!

I'm going to be taking Krichele Featherston (2 fights) and Crystal Bush (making her debut).
Here's Kris:

And Crystal..

Both of these fighters are talented and well-skilled. Though the best in the country will be there, there will also be many girls with little experience coming just to get a fight. Its about the only event a woman can go to and have a guaranteed fight. Considering how little experience women get in club shows, this is the place to be no matter where they are as amateurs. And it gives them top-tier competition.

And I love getting to see some of the other boxing chicks, including my favorite here, Barbara Buttrick, the founder of the WIBF with whom I I hold my World Title. Of course she's a little older than that now. :) She would kick your butt!

I'll be in Fort Lauderdale for the tournament and will be posting as we go. Thank goodness for laptops! I can take my office with me, and that's a good thing. The 1984 Olympic Reunion is keeping me REALLY busy. Its going to be a HUGE event! More on that later, pray for us to bring home some wins and some belts!

The festivities are going to be held at the Atlanta Marriott Century Center on August 15th in the grand ballroom. Come meet the greatest boxing team in US history!
